Many investors have become intrigued by the ongoing debate over liquefied natural gas, or LNG, exports. As far as stock market opportunities go, the only company in the U.S. with all the necessary approvals for such exports is Cheniere Energy (NYSEMKT: LNG ) . If you haven't been following the company, you may have some questions not only about Cheniere itself, but also about how it fits into the global LNG picture. That's why we created a premium report on the company, to help guide investors on whether or not Cheniere merits consideration for their portfolios.
Following is an excerpt from the report, which focuses on the company's management. It's just a sample of one section, but we hope you enjoy.
Leadership
Cheniere Energy has 10 people sitting on its board of directors. Half of them have a background in private equity or banking, while the other half has energy industry experience. Ordinarily, that sort of ratio might spook investors, but given Cheniere's dependency on investment capital, it isn't especially concerning right now. It is something investors should monitor in the coming years, however, as there is more to running a successful business than raising cash. The diversity of experience on your board can make a big difference.
The man at the top is Charif Souki. The co-founder has been the CEO since 2002, and the chairman of the board since 1999. Prior to that, Souki was an independent investment banker specializing in financing for small-cap companies, with an emphasis on the oil and gas industry. Souki is a bit of a wild card, once using the words of a racecar driver to describe himself: "If I'm not making mistakes, I'm not driving fast enough."
It was his call to turn Cheniere into an LNG importer, and his decision to again reverse course and attempt to become an exporter, all the while acknowledging: "History has demonstrated that, with all the facts in, in two years I could be totally wrong."
