Apple Could Lose App Advantage to Google, Opines FT

The Financial Times‘s Tim Bradshaw this afternoon opines that Google‘s (GOOG) Android software for mobile devices could strip Apple‘s (AAPL) iOS of its advantage in application support given rising interest in Android on the part of developers.

Google’s “Google Play” store for application downloads, and Apple’s App Store both feature 700,000 or so applications, Bradshaw writes. Google recently surpassed 25 billion downloads from Google Play but Apple is well ahead with 35 billion as of October.

Writes Bradshaw, “Thesheer scale of Android, which now accounts for three out of every four smartphones sold, is commanding developers attention, despite their continuing difficulties in making as much money on Android as on Apples App Store, which holds credit card details for more than 400m people.”

The article notes a couple of times that developers have a harder time making money putting up their wares on Google Play, and that users of iOS appear to download apps at a much higher rate than users of Android.

Apple shares today rose $2.06, or 0.4%, at $515.06, while Google stock fell $2.58, or 0.4%, to close at $706.29.
