Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have partnered to launch edX, a nonprofit organization that will offer free online classes.
“Harvard and MIT will use these new technologies and the research they will make possible to lead the direction of online learning in a way that benefits our students, our peers, and people across the nation and the globe,” Harvard President Drew Faust told CNN Money.
Students will not receive official credit for the classes from either university, but the program does offer certificates to students who master the course work, which includes exams and other assessments.
Free online education has been trending recently. The University of Michigan, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University will all offer Web-based classes through the program Coursera. Online classes offered by Udacity and Khan Academy are also gaining in popularity.
Both Harvard and MIT have committed $30 million to edX, which intends to offer classes in the fall.
