NUMMI Closes; 4,700 Jobless

After 25 years of production, Fremont-based New United Motors Manufacturing Inc., the last auto plant west of the Mississippi River, yesterday shutdown operations. Originally a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota (TM), the NUMMI plant became fully controlled by Toyota after GM walked away from the venture when it filed Chapter 11. The NUMMI shutdown puts 4,700 employees out of work, and will likely cause additional pain among the plant’s many suppliers.

Anyone want to buy a giant auto plant?
